Rare 1940s HELEN ROSE Dress Sewing Pattern Photoplay 520 Bateau Neck Tight Bodice Gored Skirt B32
Helen Rose was a two-time Oscar winner who replaced ADRIAN the head designer for MGM studios. She led the costume department from 1949 to 1966 and created for over 200 films.
She designed for movie stars Grace Kelly, Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Lucille Ball, Lauren Bacall, Shirley MacClaine, and Susan Hayward to name a few.
Known as "the mistress of chiffon", she designed the wedding dress for Grace Kelly's marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco and the chiffon dress worn by Elizabeth Taylor in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof".
This pattern is from her 1st year at MGM and was produced by Photoplay magazine.
The long dress has a ruffled collar attached to a low cut bateau neckline. The instructions says the ruffles are detachable but it is slip stitched in place so I'm guessing to detach it, you'll have to rip out the stitches. It has a close fitted buttoned bodice, long sleeves with zipper openings, a 20! gore skirt and a softly curved back hem. How Hollywood is this!
Included is a tear out from "Movie Life" magazine showing the dress as worn by Kathryn Grayson, the star of "That Midnight Kiss".
The pattern is unprinted but sadly, is MISSING THE FRONT AND BACK COLLAR PIECES. Fortunately, these are easy to reproduce. The instruction sheet is included but the envelope is open on one side and is well worn and tanned. Priced accordingly.
